Recorded webinar - 27th November 2020

A webinar with ALISON WOOLF, play therapist, play specialist and author of Better Play discussing the importance of play in schools in developing resilience through Covid and beyond

Q. Why should schools make sure we give more time for play in our current challenging times?

A. Playfulness is a natural antibody to stress, play is a preventative and remedial inoculation for uncertainty. Play and playfulness in classrooms and school playgrounds builds understanding and relationships, building stronger communities, more ready to face challenge and recover their balance.

Children who play lots are likely to have more resilience to stress, more bounce-back-ability.  Time spent playing allows a child to develop their understanding of the world, control of their narrative and explore flexible possibilities for ways forward.   Curiosity about the play of a child can build a map of their resilience and vulnerability, AND at the same time, celebrate their strengths and address needs and challenges.

This is a unique opportunity to spend time with Dr Heather Geddes who has spent her working life enabling children and young people settle to learn, especially those whose attachment difficulties and experience of extremely difficult early lives first moved her to focus on their predicament and challenges. B.A.S.E.® Babywatching programme creates unique experiences for whole classes, whilst also embracing and supporting the journey of each unique pupil. This deceptively simple programme creates conscious and subconscious links for individual children and groups, because the atmosphere it creates that has a huge impact. Children (and adults) are engaged and drawn in by the process: it provides opportunities for sustained shared watching, talking. listening, and critical thinking; and it provides focus on the development of relationships through attunement and empathy. In gentle, unobtrusive ways, the B.A.S.E.® Babywatching programme enhances pupils and community experience and capacity in a lasting manner.
